Director
Born and raised in Singapore, Ray’s developed his passion for film at 18 while studying for a diploma in Interactive Media Design at the local Temasek Design School. Awarded “The Shooting Gallery Prize” for excellence in his course of study, Ray’s final year project, a short film, “Connection” was screened at *SCAPE youth park’s “STORYBOARD’08” event.
From the period of 2006 to 2008, while serving his national service, he successfully obtained grants from the Singapore Film Commission to make a short film which also spearheaded an incubator program with his alma mater, Temasek Polytechnic, to pave the way for aspiring filmmaking students. Later the short film “ONE” was invited to screen at UK, London for the “PLUSSIXFIVE” festival.
Ray has produced eight films to date in which five are official selections for international film festivals with two receiving Best Film accolades. In 2010, he graduated with a Bachelor in Film & Television (FTV) from the Swinburne University of Technology, Australia. His final project, “BREAK”, a film about love and betrayal, received several awards including the Gold Remi Award at the 44th Annual WorldFest-Houston International Film Festival, the Orson Welles Award at the California Film Awards, the Denail Award at the Alaska International Film Awards, the Award of Excellence and Best Actor (Student) at the Los Angeles Movie Awards 2011.
In 2011, “THE TEAM”, that he wrote, produced, edited and directed won the “Overall Best Film” and “Best Editing” at Cine65, a Singapore film competition, the “You Are Only Young Once” award at the Very Short International Film Festival 2012. The short film was also recently invited to screen under a special program at the Short Shorts Film Festival Asia 2012.
Ray, among other 13 artists, was chosen to represent Singapore in the first World Event Young Artists (WEYA), organised alongside the London 2012 Olympics, a global art & culture event held in Nottingham, United Kingdom.
He was also awarded the “Ten Outstanding Young Persons of the World” – 2012 Singapore Merit Awardee by JCI TOYP.
The love for film encourages Ray to support quality films to be screen in Singapore. He was named the Ambassador for “Shnit International Short Film Festival” (Singapore).
His latest film, “Closer To Me” has been shortlisted as the only Singaporean to make it for the Jury’s awards and People’s Choice award of Louis Vuitton’s second edition Journey Awards contest.
In Japan, Sapporo, he won an “Airport Award” at the Festival Asia TV&FILM on Journey.
Currently, Ray is a member of the “Producer & Director Network ASIA”.
His latest short film, “Closer To Me” has been shortlisted as the only Singaporean to make it for the Jury’s awards and People’s Choice award of Louis Vuitton’s second edition Journey Awards contest.
